Ohio Homeless Man Earns Second Chance With 'Golden Radio Voice'
Print Story

Jan 05 2011

By Ryan G. Murphy, RTDNA Digital Media Editor

Looking for a second chance in life and in journalism, an Ohio homeless man got more than he probably ever expected when a video recently posted to YouTube demonstrated his extraordinary radio voice as he begged on a Columbus, Ohio roadside and turned him into an overnight sensation.

The man, Ted Williams, is known by locals (including police) in Columbus as "Radio Man."

Originally trained to be a radio announcer, Williams said he turned to drugs and alcohol and ruined his chances of a journalism career.

Before reading on, watch the video:

Williams was frequently spotted asking for money at a junction of I71 on Houston Street in Columbus carrying a sign that reads: 'I have a God given gift of voice. I'm an ex-radio announcer who has fallen on hard times. Please! Any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thank you and God bless you. Happy Holidays.

Williams shot into the spotlight after the Columbus Dispatch posted the video of his amazing voice on Monday, and, as of Wednesday morning, Williams had reportedly received job offers from the Cleveland Cavaliers, MTV, the NFL and ESPN. The Cleveland Cavaliers reportedly offered Williams a house.

By Friday morning, Williams had also become the new voice for Kraft Mac & Cheese and reunited with his mother, who he had not seen for 20 years. The reunion created a battle for CBS and NBC, as reported in the Huffington Post.

Williams had previously worked overnight shifts at WVKO (1580 AM), a former Columbus soul music station which now offers Catholic programming, according to Mail Online.

Mail Online also reported that TV channel WBNS-TV wants Williams to provide narration for its first-ever One Day To End Homelessness telethon on January 31, said Frank Willson, director of operations.

"Just to get back to some normalcy and responsibility -- If I can a job, whether it's a twenty-five or even $18,000, I'd be happy," Williams said in a NY Post report. "At least I know God has me where he wants me."

Homeless Drug addict as Journalist

Yes, this is what it's come to. In the Digital era, we have "citizen journalists", anyone with a camera or mic as "reporter" and now Drug addicts with a "God given" Voice are now the heralds of information in our society.

I look forward to in depth reporting, current affairs, well written and presented insights on local affairs for this man.

Please advise where his RSS feed will be so that we may be enlightened by his work.

Thanks,
Mike

He's been clean for 2 years. We've all made bad decisions and wished we could try again. Listening to him speak you can tell that he is intelligent, eloquent, and earnest. You clearly missed the point.

Yes, for TV it's beauty (or premature gray hair for men); for radio, it's voice. You have these things (and connections help, too) and the "journalism" establishment will exalt you as worthy of reading some PR bulletin they receive from their friends. This is the current state of journalism in our country - the voice of the people, the fourth branch of government has been silenced. God help our nation.

I will cheer for this guy!

WOW! You know Mike, this man is clearly very intelligent and he does indeed have a God given ability. I believe in people being able to improve their lives and being given a chance.

Drugs and alcohol affect many, many people. Should they be punished forevor for having this problem? People go through hard times, whether self inflicted or otherwise. Sounds to me like the man has been trying very hard to change his life. I would LOVE to see this guy get a HUGE contract! I will cheer for the guy!

Homeless Guy with Golden Voice

I am not a big fan of the homeless. I think many are scam artists and drug addicts. These are people who are willingly throwing away their lives. And that is what this man did by his own admission. God gave him a gift and he threw it away. But now I believe with his sobriety and his humility, God has opened doors for him. That voice is absolutely amazing. And perhaps over time he can use this talent to help others. I hope he stays clean and hope he always is humble and I hope he prospers greatly in this autumn time of his life. What a remarkable voice! God Bless him!

Mike, you are right. We should never forgive anyone who has made a mistake. That's what Jesus would want, total unforgiveness. Also he would want all news to come from corporatist sources. It's like that time he told people to stone that woman. And when he got sponsored by the Pharisees.

A chance

Yes. Anyone deserves a second chance.
Yes. He is talented.
Yes. He's been sober for two years.
But I think we will let this man down by not giving, in addition to a job, some good solid advice.
For his own advancement he needs a local dental school to help with the appearance of his teeth. A barber to spruce him up some. A mentor to explain "how to work" and how to overcome obstacles without turning to an addictive substance. When you have been on the streets for a long time, you loose the basic life skills which enable you to be a good citizen. I have hope for him if people are sincere in their offerings and willing to step out of their comfort zone and really offer him some good suggestions on life. Deep down I think this is what he wants but know of no other way to ask, than other than a "job". I have helped homeless to get jobs before and I found that without a solid mentor and support system they usually fall back to the past ways. Don't we all? So will someone who has made it in his industry with a "heart" please mentor this man.
The other thing which concerns me is our attitude that just because someone has a nice voice, they are deemed "obviously intelligent". Yes it is good to be articulate but it does not follow that it makes one intelligent. Perhaps this is why we are mislead by so many journalists today. Yes there is a spot for this young man; but he needs more than to be told he is intelligent because he has a nice voice. Let's get real people.

He CLAIMS to have been clean for 2 years. Staying sober is not easy, not to mention staying sober while you're homeless.

The problem isn't that he doesn't have a job or that he's homeless, it what led him there.

Clear Channel just hired this guy to look good. What's going to happen IF he screws up? Pulling someone off the street and telling them that you're going to give them a 2nd chance in life is a huge responsibility. It's not just a paycheck and a thank you. It's teaching them how to live as a productive member of society. They better be patient with him and not tears his drams away the minute he screws up....because he will! That's what addicts do, they screw up!

BTW....there's lots of good people out of work that have done good things with their life besides drinking and drugs.

By Brady on Jan 05 2011
hope all works well!

This guy definately deserves another shot. Good for him that he got sober! Just because someone used to do drugs doesn't mean they are a despicable human being. Some of the comments so far have been nothing short of mean spirited and ignorant.

It's good to hear a "positive story" amidst all the garbage news we're usually fed on a daily basis.

This guy's been blessed with a god given golden voice. If he's sick of his lot in life and chooses a narrower path; then let his travels be smooth and his life enriched.
I hope he doesn't forget where his blessing came from and what he needs to do to keep it.

If he were so motivated, so gifted, so desirous of improving his lot in life, I honestly don't think he'd have graduated no further than a street corner day after day after day, as evidenced by his weathered skin.

You have your own se of issues and brokenness to deal with, no? both problems are solved by a relationship with Christ. God bless, bro. While you are sitting in judgement, not only did Christ say, "what you do for the least of these, you have done for Me," but He also says...."what you did NOT do for the least of these, you did NOT do for Me." Think about it.

Ohio Homeless Man Earns Second Chance With 'Golden Radio Voice'

I see a lot of negative posts here and it is dis-heartening. As a person who has worked with the homeless in a shelter I can tell you that they are stuck in a tough spot. To get a job they need a resume, decent clean clothes, and a permanent address. Shelters are full of talented and intelligent people. The donated clothes that they often wear are other people's cast off items that they have to rummage through in the shelter's closet.

Rather than criticize this man, why don't you take on a person at a shelter as a project- take them to get decent interview clothes and write them a resume.

It is true that some people that are homeless don't care, but the average homeowner in 2010 is 10 pay checks from where this man is. It could be you.

Second chances

I'm happy for this guy. I'm thrilled to see this guy get a fresh chance at a productive happy life. Sure people screw up and end up on the street by their own mistakes sometimes life just deals good people a bad hand. In either case people like Mike should hope that others would not be so cold to them if they woke up one morning to find their world turned upside down.

By SJ on Jan 05 2011
God gave him a second chance

Anyone posting a comment that references God and anything negative with this guy, need to get right with God themselves. No matter his story, he's a child of God and he's as equally loved as everyone else on here. No more, no less. Perhaps you can find a reference in the Bible that challenges this thought, but I remember Christ giving a prostitute a second chance and he never judged her. Perhaps they have a higher opinion of themselves than God does.

God Given Talent

Mike - I truly feel sorry for your type of being (certainly NOT human). First of all you are in Houston where I'm sure there are NO Homeless people or refugees from Katrina. I realize that in Texas there are no imperfect people - only ones who pull themselves up by their bootstraps. Furthermore, judging by your very Un-Christian HATRED for Homeless people I would guess that Jesus would have amounted to a dirty, useless, homeless bum by your standards. Lastly, Mike, if by some misfortune you should become jobless or homeless I hope you will continue to be righteous & Hate homeless people with the same fervor. Of course I would not want you to be a hippocrite so just save everybody time & start by Hating what you see in the mirror every day of your useless, hateful, pathetic life.

Radio Man Fan

I am a conservative and a Rush fan. I love this heart warming story and I wish him a great future. This is a story of humility and redemption. It is a great story for personal responsibility. He admits to self destructive behavior and offers no excuses. He realizes that only his talent and willingness to work will change his life. He also realizes that that he does not deserve a handout. He merely asks for handouts on an exit ramp... not demand from a government source. The choice to give or not is up to those who drive by. I could "Monday-Morning quartback" his strategy for a comeback, but hey its working. If I owned a production company, I would hire him. We both could make good profits. Notice, that I said I would hire him; not become his self-appointed savior. We would work together for as long as it was mutually beneficial. His future is uncertain, but it is getting better everyday. I am rooting for him!

Radio isn't what it used to be

Unfortunately, radio isn't a good path to financial security.

After college, I spent several years working in radio and got to know the industry pretty well.

20 years ago working in radio was a pretty hand-to-mouth existance. Unless you're in a big, highly competitive market, you're probably making a little more than minimum wage. A smaller market station simply cannot afford to pay announcers a decent wage. There's just not enough money.

In a large market, you stay on the air only as long as you pull in the big numbers. Ratings drop slighly, and you're gone.

Radio has never been kind to aging voice talent.

Sounds Great

I worked in radio for a few years. Small market, so it didn't pay much. I did production work, both live and recorded, I also was an air personality. I think some of the offers this guy is getting are great. I would love to have these offers myself, and wish this guy would have received these offers earlier. Best of luck to him. also if you do not like the homeless or think this man should not be given the chances offered. You should probably learn to think a little more logically. It may be more expensive in the long run to let this man stay on the streets. Healthcare for the homeless is a huge burden on the system. Plus he will be one less homeless person for you to dislike.

I wonder wrote,

"Why is it that he says god gave him his voice, but doesn't blame god for giving him his drug habit. I always find it interesting that people are willing to thank god for the god thinks, but not damn him for the bad things."

The answer is because his voice was given by God and not a choice of Ted made and the drug habit was the result of Ted's choice to start doing drugs in the beginning in direct disobedience to God's commands.

To blame God is to totally deny humans have chosen to sin and to not take responsibility for our collective evil behavior.

Unlike you, Ted has obviously taken responsibility for his mistakes and that is most likely how he has stayed clean for 2 years.

No one will change until they finally admit addiction is their own choice and fault.

How naive people can be. First of all, if he was
really clean for two years, he wouldn't still
be begging on the street corner. Lesson No.1 with
addicts of any kind: Never trust what they say,
never depend on them until they've positively
proven that they have undergone the necessary change. He's obviously a long way from that point.
To those of you who are quick to embrace and grab your hankie; google his name every few weeks and you'll be enlightened.

People can and do change....

Fact: People can and do change....As with our country, his future has yet to be written.

Ted Williams

Go Ted! What a great story. For those of you that are confusing journalism with voice overs it is a totally different thing. Voice artists just read copy. They do not report. Just to set the record straight since there seemed to be a lot of confusion out there. And boy does he have the voice. I was in the voice industry and with a voice like that he will get a lot of jobs. You know people take different paths in life and addictions can make bad things happen to good people. Sometimes with addictions your self esteem suffers and it is hard to pick yourself up again without a support system which he may not have had. I am just glad he could turn himself around. Sounds like now he is on the right path. God bless Ted! I would listen to anything you read for!

Go Ted, Go!

Yep! I've got the DEEP-TRUCKING voice to carry-on ALL DAY/ALLNIGHT. I did one stint in a Chicago WareHouse off Rand
X-mas of '003. My "homies" unloaded trucks for The Eddie Bauer Warehouse X-mas Sale & got fired.
I was offered a room with a mike and became the announcer to..."Welcome to the Eddie B. Warehouse Sale! Our hours are.. For more info.." I was never more HAPPY with my life. But, my BAd Check Felony (Late in Rent) has side-lined me to Kenosha and warehouse work only. Seems I'll never get back to where I want tobe. Staying away from the upper eschelon in rentals has humbled my life peacefully.

This Apprentice might make it.

Go Ted, Go!
It was the 2 months before X-mas when all thru the Warehouse were nuthin but homies unloading truck like a mouse. Then they fled with their loot hoping never to return and UP! pops John G! for a chance to earn a spot in the Holiday announcers arena. BANG! I went from setting up tables and racks of clothes to the Holiday Sales Announcer for the Eddie Bauer Warehosue X-mas Sale. '003 was a blast for me.But, since a Bad Check Felony arrest-but NO conviction- Im waiting to expunge and git the HELL outta Kenosha for good.

If you can't say anything nice...

...don't say anything at all.

Because this is not a story of earth-shattering importance. This is NOT something that needs investigative journalists to uncover government money going to corrupt sources. This is a LITTLE story, about a guy hopefully getting his life back on track and becoming a productive member of society.

So save your rants and stress and muck-raking for places where it'll really MATTER to the state of our country or humanity, and just let this guy alone to deal with his life.

I'm only 40 and feel like an old person when I think "People used to be a lot more polite when I was growing up!"

homeless guy with radio voice

I\'m a recovering alcoholic. Never homeless, but could have been. Unless you have lived in my or his shoes, don\'t judge. I got sober at age 53, went back to school and became a nurse and am doing great. Please be supportive of this person, or anyone for that matter, who is trying to do better. Isn\'t this what life is about? What if it was your brother, like mine who didn\'t get sober and was drunk and hit by a car and killed? This homeless man is sober and wants to get better. Please give him a chance. We should all have second chances because we all as humans make mistakes.

Better voice than Obama

He dees not need a teleprompter. Also appears to be more qualified. He actually had a real job in the past. I like him because because he asks before taking my money. Lets put someone who knows what they are doing in the white house... Radio Man for President!

fantastic

absolutely amazing! I'm mesmerized watching this. I wish this gentleman the best. He is clearly looking for a second chance, and I hope someone gives it to him.

It's amazing the lengths people go..

..to look at the negative side of every thing. It sickens me how judgemental and outright ignorant some of these posts are. It's like 'people' can barely begrudge him the credit for his awesome pipes, or the fact he's addressing his addiction problems or that he's obviously intelligent and well spoken. They're is such a rush to pish all over every aspect, what a jaded, negative, miserable and pathetic collection you all are.

The gentleman with a golden voice

I think this guy would be perfect candidate to fill in for Tommy B on 92KQRS Radio in Minnapolis when Tommy takes one of his monthly vacations!

"Second Chance"?

This is not a "Second Chance" for 'ole Ted.
Probably more like his 30th. He hasn't seen his mom in 20 yrs. Nice guy huh?

By Bill on Jan 06 2011
I'm glad people are not God.

If this man has truly cleaned up his life. I say give him a chance. It's so easy for others that have never been there to cast the first stone. He sounds like he's wanting to do right. Give him a chance. God has no throw aways. I say if he's really turned it around give him a chance.

By Coast2co on Jan 06 2011
Good Luck

Good for him. I hope he gets on the right track and has a bright future. I was a DJ at a small town radio station from the age of 13 to 18 (dad owned the station), so I know what he means by the magic of it all....there's also a lot of boredom involved too though. Anyway, good luck golden voice guy.

Does not "Deserve" second change

Neither he, nor anybody else "deserves" a second chance. Kudos on ClearChannel for giving this guy a chance that he doesn't deserve on his own merits. However, his prospects are real thin. Homelessness is virtually always a collateral consequence of deep-seated mental and/or emotional dysfunction. A job will help, but he is going to need much more than a mere job to pull him out of the hole he dug for himself.

The Homeless guy w/ the VOICE

Well, a talent who threw it all away gets a second chance. I guess. Hope he does not blow it again.

By john smith on Jan 06 2011
2nd chances

"If but for the grace of God there go I" This statement is taken from the Word of God. It carries the thought of one considering themselves to be blessed, because any one of us could be placed in this kind of situation, because we all have made bad choices in life and God gave us a second chance. But he has humbled himself before God and thats why he's being blessed now. Be careful not to throw stones John 8:1-11

Man with the golden voice

Easy now folks, Mike from Texas has a right to his opinion. Its not his fault he is from Texas where 90% of the population has parents that were related before they got married!

By TJMaxx2000 on Jan 07 2011
Past and recent past

Anyone looked into his past? Like his 4 daughters and blind wife he abandoned? How about the second lady he impregnated and left with a child? Charged with fraud? Was he not robbing cars 2 days earlier in a Lowes parking lot???? Now he has hit the jackpot, if nobody will look into him a bit more...

By Mike on Jan 07 2011
The average IQ in America is 50!

So I guess all you people that think he should be forgiven for robbing people and given a second chance are going to go down to a prison near you and find a convict that has just been released , so you can take him in. Remember, even if he/she has killed someone or is a predator, THEY DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE ACCORDING TO ALL OF YOU!!!

By bob on Jan 08 2011
fools for the Golden Voice

I said it would take a few weeks, but I was wrong,as it only took two. Dry for 2 years, but still panhandling? P.T. Barnum was right, evidenced by
the people here and in the media that got suckered
by ole' Ted.
