The News Decision Making Workshop will take place in the Jacksonville, FL Marriott, located at 4670 Salisbury RoadClick here for more information on the Marriott.  Please note that RTNDF will make your room reservation for you. Please do not make your own reservation directly with the hotel unless you or your company will pay for it. Through a grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, RTNDF will pay for Friday’s night hotel room (January 23) for out-of-town attendees.

Tight deadlines and tough decisions are a daily challenge in your newsroom.

This unique workshop, presented by the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation will help you make better, more confident decisions under pressure.

Among the topics covered in this highly interactive and practical workshop are:

  • Learn how to make tough ethics calls on deadline
  • Consider how and when to use disturbing images and/or graphic audio in your newscasts
  • How to cover juveniles and other vulnerable people
  • Discuss the ethics of "going live"
  • Build guidelines for the use of confidential sources
  • Develop ethical guidelines for video and audio editing

The workshop includes a live focus group where you will watch and listen to local citizens talk about journalism ethics. The workshop is facilitated by the Poynter Institute's Al Tompkins, co-author of the RTNDF's Newsroom Ethics workbook and DVD and Lynn French, assistant chief photographer/multimedia journalist at KPNX-TV in Phoenix. Every participant will receive a copy of the workbook and DVD to use in helping to train their own newsroom.
